Nicaragua is home to a large range of animals, from different sizes, colors and aspects. There are over 20 different species of squirrels in the country, ranging in size from the small and agile pygmy squirrel to the larger and more robust spiny-tailed squirrel.
The most common one that you will find in the Laguna de Apoyo is called the variegated squirrel. The variegated squirrel is a beautiful and unique species found in the tropical forests of Central and South America, including Nicaragua. This squirrel is known for its striking appearance, with a mix of black, white, and reddish-brown fur that creates a mottled or "variegated" pattern.
The variegated squirrel is a medium-sized squirrel, typically measuring around 30 cm in length, with a long, bushy tail. These squirrels are agile climbers and are often seen darting through the treetops in search of food. They are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of fruits, seeds, nuts, and insects.
One of the most interesting features of the variegated squirrel is its vocalizations.
These squirrels are known for their high-pitched, trilling calls, which are often used to communicate with other members of their group. They are also known to make a variety of other sounds, including chirps, clicks, and even whistles.
